The North East of England is part of the Northern PowerHouse. The concept will be the poorer without this region with its 5 universities, 6 venture capital funds and over £300m investment of public and private venture capital over the last 5 years into a vibrant startup, manufacturing and techology world. Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Darlington to name a few of the great places that house our 48,000 or so small growing businesses. They should all be part of the wider Northern PowerHouse of Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and others.
However, I'm not optimistic that the local leaders in business or the Councils here speak loud enough and come together at times like this to present a united front. Osbourne's UK Government Budget yesterday won't be liked by all but he calls the shots and we should accept it and move on. If he, the paymaster, wants a Mayor as part of any devolutions of powers and money for the area then lets get on with it. We were left out of the Chancellors budget speach as we are not pushing forward quickly enough not because he hates the region.
This is not a political point. Its practical economics ensuring we are not left behind. I'm a Londoner who has adopted the region as my home my daughter has grown up here and am proud of the businesses I have built here and the investments I make. I want London and the Government to notice and my fellow entrepreneurs and business leaders need to stand up and say the same if they want more control of our destiny and our place in the North.
